Bonjela or Anbesol are great for anaesthetising the area, but they are slippery and don't stay on your gum or tongue for long. There is a cortisone-based cream for mouth ulcers called ADCORTYL (available from Boots at around 4.50 for a tube). I rinse with salty water first, then with clean water and then apply ADCORTYL. It sticks to the gum or tongue and forms a coating over the sore area, a bit like latex skin. The best time to put it on is at bedtime, so that you are not disturbing the coating for several hours and it gets time to work. The "skin" will still be there in the morning, and you can rinse it away. It makes your mouth feel dry and sticky, but it is the best cure that I have found. Hope the sores clear up in time for your Christmas dinner.
