Can anyone recommend a good one?
I'm happy to spend up to £250, as it's for Mr P's 30th birthday. (Yes, I'm really stuck for what to get him.)
There seem to be so many about!

I got one of these 'managers specials' - it was effectively brand, spanking new with all the latest software loaded.

On further research it seems the Humax has an ethernet port but its not wi fi ready. So I assume this dongle turns it into a wi fi device.
I note the edimax you link to on amazon looks rather old and only does "G" wi fi, whereas most routers and laptops are now "N".
Here is a newer one that is "N" (a little more expensive)
