Do you know why it started as 999. It was (I once read) so that in a smoke filled or darkened room on a telephone with a dial, you could locate the 9 as it was next to the dial stop.

I always wondered why they picked 9 until I read the article.
Now that ^^ is interesting!
If they had used 666 instead would it be a direct line to hell ?.
