There are no half measures such as Mr Cameron suggests. As jake-the-peg frequently and quite correctly points out, you cannot belong to a club and choose which rules you will comply with and which you will not. The UK must decide whether it is in or out and that is the only question that the electorate can be asked. Any other question will allow the government too much latitude to fudge the issue and deny the electorate their wishes should they vote for a change the status quo.
This has now become a fundamental issue. There is widespread dissatisfaction with the EU among voters of all hues and our relationship with the behemoth is affecting almost every aspect of life here. The idea that the same people who were responsible for introducing the single currency should have control over UK budgets or defence, is truly frightening. If the majority of the electorate is daft enough to want the UK to remain in the EU that is that. But it is a matter that should be put to them.
