I'd recommend either upgrading to windows 2000 (its FAR superior to the dreadful windows ME), or you could continue to use windows ME and use a 3rd-party system such as yamipod. This will let you copy music over, etc. But you won't get the full features of your iPod (no picture/video support, as yet), and you won't get the nice interface of iTunes. Or the iTunes Music Store for buying online.
[perhaps other 3rd party software lets you use pictures and video functionality?]
