I agree, thats very rude, that happened to me at work once and i stood like a plum for ages, in the end i just turned and walked off!
I agree. I appreciate it's easier for anyone to talk in their native language, but courtesy dictates that you do this away from anyone who doesn't understand.
Yip very rude, it's like whispering in front of people, that drives me mad!
Why didn't you tell them, and then walk away?
Rude, ignorant and insensitive. I would have walked away, after I'd I'd expressed how I felt.
Yes, rude and selfish. I would have let them finish and then made a jokey sarcastic comment, such as "Oh, you're back are you?" or "Am I allowed to join in now??!". Sounds like they were also showing off.
You should have stood there yawning, then just walked away.
Not only rude, but ignorant, the main fault was with the person you were talking to, if you can you should tell him how you felt.

Well littlemissx he has proved himself pig ignorant in two languages and text. Glad I don't work with him!! Learn some nice meaty Russian phrases just for him. They swear beautifully!!

Hi there! I'm French myself, and live in the UK. I work with people from all over the world, and some of my closer friends are french.

When there is a group of us, it is accepted that we all speak english, out of courtesy for everyone else, and because we're in the UK, after all !

Apart from when we're just between french people, or when one of them comes in the pub and I will greet them in french, we all speak english. It's not easy sometimes, especially when you have a good joke and it won't translate well.....lol But if your friends are english, thus perfectly bilingual ( which some of us at work aren't, but we still make the effort ) I see no reason why they should exclude you from the conversation in such a rude manner. I'm with you on that one. Next time, either just walk away, or go for it and give them a piece of your mind right there. Happy Holidays !

Also littlemissx what you need to understand is...hang on a mo...bueono estente senor va de grunu, es la dre va va va scorchio, muno de scaliche de ce la Kevin Keegan est a le buono ce droppo ok cha, sorry about that where were we....

I'm a fluent welsh speaker and speak it at home. My boyf however doesn't understand a word. My family and I try to speak to eachother in english when he is in the room so as he's involved. However, I sometimes forget as I have spoken to them in Welsh all my life! I really dont mean to be rude, but occasionally I genuinley forget! I would never knowingly do it though, cause it's damn rude!
I'd love to know what they were talking about! maybe the guy was trying to show off and impress you with his linguistic skills? But if he was, he's just bombed. Its the height of bad manners - if you know these people, I suggest you nip it in the bud before they do it again. Or next time, walk away - that will stop them mid sentence!

i'd have given them both a weird look and said "I studied that language at school, so thanks a bunch" and stomped off - just to confuse them, and make them worry in case they had said something about you or about something you weren't supposed to hear - they'd be worrying how much you understood.

if they said nothing untoward then no harm done, but it'll make them think twice.

bad bad manners
Yea, rude and annoying.

I like Scarlett's idea :)
