I am currently studying on a PGCE course in Secondary education and want to go on to teach in specail needs education. Can I complete my NQT year at a Special Needs school?
This is something you need to ask your college mentor. They are running the course, and will be able to advise you. I imagine they will be delighted that you want to specialise in such a tricky area. You will have to get a job first though! Could you ask your lecturer if they could put you in a special school for teaching practice as well? That way you will gain experience and you will know if it is what you want to do before actually committing to a real job.
The majority of SEN schools normally only accept applicants who've either got a minimum of 3 years experience in mainstream education (and are prepared to work towards specialist qualifications) or who've already got specific SEN qualifications.
