My grandaughters employer wants to take £100 a week off her for the next 2 weeks because they have just realised that when she first started there 9 months ago she did not work a week in hand, 2 questions, (1) Can they take money out of her wages without her say-so and (2) If they can, can't she offer a lower amount or not agree to it at all.

Two questions:
1) Is it detailed as part of T&Cs of employment, as perhaps identified in the Employees Handbook or other info published by the employer for the employees?
2) if not 1), is everyone else (who is paid weekly) paid a 'week in hand', in that it could be construed as an implied term of her employment?
i am guessing that as its only for 2 weeks that she only owes £200 - if that is her weekly wage, then taking £100 of it 2 weeks on the run is going to leave her very short - that is half her whole wage!

if she does owe them the money then i am sure if she presents those facts to them they will agree to spread the cost out to something manageable like £25 a week

Week in hand is a barbaric out dated practice I suggest she contacts citizens advice but by the sound of it if she doesn't comply or come to some agreement her cards could well be marked so she should seek advice about where she stand contractually too. Quietly mind get her info before negotiating.
