sorry if you misunderstood - just want to know how to make the crumble that is all.
4oz of spftened butter
4oz of brown sugar
4oz of flour
Rub together until it looks like breadcrumbs the add 1oz of rolled oats and 1oz chopped nuts.
Sprinkle on top of apple and rhubarb.

bake at 180 for forty minutes.
I make a big batch of crumble topping and freeze what I don't use.

250g butter, cold and cut into cubes
600g self-raising flour
250g Caster sugar
100g Soft brown sugar
100g chopped hazelnuts
100g chopped almonds
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
(the nuts and spices can be omitted if you don't like them)

I make it by hand but if you have a processor then it's much easier. Just put the butter, flour, sugars and spices if using them into the processor. Whizz until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir the nuts through the mixture if using them.

If making by hand, rub the flour into the butter using your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugars, spices and nuts.
^ softened butter!
^ cold butter! lol That's how I was taught anyway. If it's too soft it can make it greasy lol x
I didn't know that vodka. I'll try that next time.
Doesn't it take ages to rub in if its cold?
I find it's easier and you get a finer "breadcrumb" x
If you grate the hard butter it's easy to rub in. I like to use a mixture of flour and porridge oats for the crumble.
When I want a crumble, I phone MIL and invite her over, she never comes empty handed! Bless, she usually brings a delicious quiche and a rhubarb crumble.
For next time - rhubarb and orange is a deelish combo - put the grated orange rind in the crumble mix and the juice in with the fruit. I made this so much when my kids were small its become a family joke. Rhubarb and strawberries good too.

thanks all - will try the various fruits and also will do it by the processor.
I always use cold butter, cubed. Then I make extra and freeze it so I always have a crumble topping in the freezer.
