This may well be rubbish but I'm sure someone told me that the song was about him refusing to go on health kick and lose weight despite his girlfriend wanting him to do this.

I heard him say in an interview that it was lie.  I think if you listen to the rest of the lyrics that kind of makes sense.

Actually, Meatloaf did go on a 'health kick'.  He even ended up coaching softball at a local high school.

The song was written by - misunderstood genius in my opinion - Jim Steinman & while not his finest, the lyrics are very Steinman.  He actually managed to sneak the line / soundbite, "I'll do anything for love... but I won't do that!" in the Bonnie Tyler track "Getting So Excited" which he produced several years before Meat Loaf'* ***.  If you listen to that, it's very obvious what it means
