I know this is a long shot but aside from the cab, is there anywhere you can get free legal advice and help?

Depends what about. If it's regarding housing law for example, the local authority tenancy relations officer will advise you free for example.
there are still solicitors that will offer the first half an hour appointment as free - quite good to get some basics

A lot can be done in the first half hour that undercovers describes. If that is not enough, it is probably better to pay for a further appointment than to try to get advice online. Only this morning I read replies in Answerbank saying what I had always thought to be true. I checked what the law actually said, and it had been changed as long ago as 1989.
