I was just going to ask what this was about, but I'm not more intrigued by the "fish and chip babies"....???

Madmen - It is babies born in Africa, some to mothers who have HIV or are extremely poor so that when they leave hospital they go - literally- wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm, like a bundle of fish and chips used to be (Not now but in the past). They needed tiny garments and hats - pattern was provided and there are collection people to whom you can send anything you make. Any oddments of wool could be used.

You don't need to be a good knitter - the pattern is very simple. I have been doing other knitting so I am not sure where my copy is, but as I am nearing the end of this cardigan, I will probably go back to it to use up my left over oddments.

This is the pattern I use:

Knitted Baby Hat

Double knitting wool – Size 8 (5mm) and Size 6 (4mm) knitting pins
Cuff:
With smaller pins cast on 48 stitches. Work in K1, P1ribbing for 1 ½”.
Change to larger pins
Crown:
Row 1 (right side) Knit
Row 2 (wrong side) Purl
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until work measures 5” from cast one edge ending with a wrong-side row
Shape Top
Row 1: *K2tog, K2 – repeat from * across: 36 stitches
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: *K2tog, K2 – repeat from * across: 27 stitches
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: *K2tog, K1 – repeat from * across: 18 stitches
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: K2tog across: 9 stitches.
Cut yarn leaving a long end.
Thread wool into bodkin/darning needle and draw through remaining stitches on needle. Draw up tightly and fasten off securely. Sew seam. Turn up cuff.

Baby Jumper knitting pattern (Knitted all in one)
Approx. 50g DK wool
Use double knitting wool and 4mm needles, cast on 44 stitches.
Work 18 Rows in K2, P2 rib
Work 30 Rows stocking stitch (1 row plain, 1 row purl)
Cast on 12 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows and at the same time change to K2,P2 (for sleeve)
Rib 22 more rows.
Next row: Rib 21, cast off 26 stitches, rib 21 (Please cast these stitches off loosely in rib, to Allow the neck to stretch over a baby’s head)
Next row: Rib 21, cast on 26 stitches, rib 21 (Please cast these stitches on loosely, using one size bigger needles if necessary).
Work 22 rows in K2, P2 rib
Cast off 12 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows
Work 30 rows stocking stitch
Work 18 rows, K2, P2 rib
Cast off. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Baby Beanie Hat Pattern (Approx. 20g DK wool)
Using double knitting wool and 4mm needles cast on 64 stitches and work 14 rows in (K1 P1) rib.
Work 18 rows in stocking stitch or until work measures 11cm from cast on edge
Shape crown as follows – Row 1: *k6, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of row (56 stitches)
Row 2 and every alternate following row: Knit
Row 3: *k5, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of row (48 stitches)
Row 5: *k4, k2tog. Repeat from * to end of row (40 stitches)
Continue decreasing in this manner until (k1 k2tog) has been completed and 16 stitches remain.
Knit 1 row. Break yarn and thread through remaining 16 stitches. Pull up tightly and join Seam

Hi,maggiebee,don't know if it'll make all that a difference but needle sizes are-No8-4mm and no6-5mm.
I'll have a go at the hats.

They're great for making out of scraps of wool, quinie - and some people make really inventive ones. Me, I just do a stripy hat and a bobble.
