Why are cars that are built to be sold in this country, built to go at faster speeds, than our road laws allow?

Do you really want cars to be forcably bunched up in hordes on the motorway ? It's bad enough having to wait behind one lorry flat out at its governed speed of 57mph trying to pass another doing 56 mph ! Don't get me wrong, I am not a boy racer but I think governed cars would increase road accidents.

I'm a lorry driver, and believe me, its as frustrating for us to be limited to 56mph as it is for the cars that get stuck behind us.
If we wernt restricted, there would be no more bunching up of us lorrys on the roads, as we would have the speed to over take a slightly slower vehicle then get back in to the inside lane.
like andy_blade /i too am lorry driver and I don't like the speed restrictor on hgv's. but one thing more annoying than a slow hgv is a car driver doing less than a hgv. I had one in front of me this morning at about 5am in lane one with nothing in front of him or her for miles.............. WHY????????
