Why are cars that are built to be sold in this country, built to go at faster speeds,  than our road laws allow?

If car engines were fitted with a governor that restricted the vehicle to 70mph, acceleration would be drastically reduced, and acceleration is an important safety factor in emergencies. Do you really want cars to be forcably bunched up in hordes on the motorway ? It's bad enough having to wait behind one lorry flat out at its governed speed of 57mph trying to pass another doing 56 mph !  Don't get me wrong, I am not a boy racer but I think governed cars would increase road accidents.

Thankyou Derekpara, just want to point out I wasn't wanting to see this done, ( I don't even drive) I just wanted to know if there was a  Technical reason :)

I'm a lorry driver, and believe me, its as frustrating for us to be limited to 56mph as it is for the cars that get stuck behind us.

If we wernt restricted, there would be no more bunching up of us lorrys on the roads, as we would have the speed to over take a slightly slower vehicle then get back in to the inside lane.

There wont be any restrictions against it as speeding motorists produce such a nice big income.

most cars are restricted already anyway, although they are restricted to 155mph, but a lot of bmw and mercedes etc all have this speed limiters on there cars!
like andy_blade /i too am lorry driver and I don't like the speed restrictor on hgv's. but one thing more annoying than a slow hgv is a car driver doing less than a hgv. I had one in front of me this morning at about 5am in lane one with nothing in front of him or her for miles.............. WHY????????
