Apple cottoned on to the fact that calling little Application Programs by the little name Apps it would seem to align it with their products. The rest is history.

Its trendy to use the word App, just like all the twaaaats who have to be seen to be doing something on their devices on the trains and buses etc,.....most of them are actually doing nothing, looking at their screens for texts they havnt recieved, willing someone to call them so they can feel important. the phone has all sorts of ways to let them know if theres anything incoming.
Its my latest pastime on train journeys, stand up and look over peoples shoulders to see exactly what it is they arent doing on their device !
apps is just a trendy word for programs that fill your phone/device up with junk most people never use.

yeah ... i feel soooo important when i look at my phone ... i get it out all the time, not because i am bored and there isn't much else to do, and not because there are lots more things to do on a phone than wait for a text - but to show off! ...
because i know that, although 99% of people also have a phone, i am totally convinced they are green with envy at me and my phone, because I am just pretending to use it, i just press things etc... which is a lot easier than actually using some of the many functions on it ...
i also look at others with raging jealousy ...because they are looking at their phone ... it makes me wish i was them and had their life ... because they are looking at their phone ...
what a ridiculous thing to say... i am amazed it even crossed your mind.

The first instance of application being shortened to app in the popular media was about 15 years ago when programs such as Word or Photoshop became known as 'Killer Apps' meaning they were the best.
The iPhone was the first to call the icons on the homescreen apps. And they sold those through the app store. The orher smartphones adopted (stole) the lingo and it is now widely used and is the standard term.
