Hi there i'm doing a study about happiness and want to find out which sounds and gestures you make when highly ecstatic.

To give more detail i want you to close your eyes and imagine that you

1- Won 12 million on the lottery.

2- Just had your conviction overturned after spending 15 years in prison for a crime you didn't commit.

3- Just found that you or partner or kids/grandkids are pregnant after being told you/they can't have kids.

4- Just found out that a cancer which was meant to kill you or partner/child/grandchild is in Complete remission.

How would you react, what is the exact word or words and what kind of body gestures?

Ie, jump up and shout yes and punch the air.

Now you.

Yeeeeeeeeeeee-haaaaa!
Knowing me for 2, 3, 4, I'd burst out crying with relief. For no 1 (aside the fact I don't buy the lottery so would think it was a set up) I'd be gob smacked.
Well, let's see, I guess I'd jump up, shout yes and punch the air!
EEEYESSSYESSYESSSYEEEAAAYESSSONOONOONOYEESSSS

...and sits down ...

will that do for a satisfactory hiccup?
1 Gasp. Shake of the head in disbelief. (More so because I don't do the lottery).
2 Collapse onto my knees and prayed thanks to God.
3 Real elation. Smile, laugh, jump up and down. Tears of joy.
4 Again, give thanks to God probably tears of joy.
1. Ring my ex to tell her my good news.
2. Ring my lawyer to start compensation claim.
3. Open the champagne.
4. More champagne.
Probably jump up and down and squeal! I'm just a big kid really :-)
I have a tendency to clap when i'm delighted by something frivolous. But if it is a serious issue i would just be quietly pleased. No gestures at all.

Raise one eyebrow sardonically, and say "excellent" for 1,2 and 3.

For 4, it would be to raise both eyebrows in pleased surprise, and remark "jolly good"....
1 Bastard!! The last rollover was 18 million
I was just talking about this to someone earlier. I know how I feel about things, but I'm never really sure how I'm expected to react. So I'd probably have a delayed reaction that seemed incredibly fake.
I seldom let my emotions show either way, happy or sad. At least not in public. I once entered a competition on Virgin Radio and had a call from them saying I may have won first prize and my reaction was hardly extatic, I'm just not that sort of person. First prize went to someone who screamed so loudly it nearly broke their telephone.

I kept a typically British stiff upper lip when taking my very poorly cat to the vet to be put to sleep but only when I was back home in privacy did I have a good cry.
