Ed, I know this question has been asked several times by me and others.
Can you please, please find a way to make one 'land' on the most recent or last response when one clicks on a thread in the grey box? Usually I click on the thread in the grey box, if it's a thread with several pages I have to click several times before reaching the last page. Most times when I immediately click on last page I end up with "404 Page Not Found". It's becoming quit frustrating for me, especially when I'm following a long thread and contributing to that thread.
a quick read of the last few contributions usually tee up whether the thread is worth burrowing into as to the full range of contributions, that's why.
"But what about the people who haven't read the thread? "
When they click on 1st page I'm sure they'd have a much better chance of getting to that 1st page than me getting "404 page not found" when I click on "last" . For example, the cyclist thread, it's been busy all day; I've clicked on those already read pages umpteen times before I could see if I have some valid contribution to offer. Why isn't it possible for me to see the last response?

"This does suggest that you have server problems.
How about turning off the ridiculous "related threads" feature to give the server less to display on each page?"
