I'm not sure when, but it was first invented in the Champagne region of France, hence the name
Champagne was first invented about 1690 from the region of France known as Champagne. It was invented as a resulr of new techniques in the wine-making industry. At the end of the 17th century, people began to realise that wine would keep longer and travel better in bottles than in wooden vats. Heavier bottles were produced and in 1801 a famous chemist called Chaptal wrote that 'sparkling wines derive their properties from being bottled before fermentation has taken place'. However, champagne was not invented by a single person, rather it was as a result of a revolution in the wine making industry of that time.
