Improving English

Can anyone recommend an 'improve your English' course or book etc?

I have some info on a course advertised in the papers but it seems like it could be a bit of a con....i never trust those things.

My English isn't bad but i would like to widen my vocabulary etc...

from the way you've typed your question i would say your english is fine (better than most english i'd say)

i would suggest something along the lines of getting a word a day mail alert to improve your vocabulary and just spending time with people will improve your english

Forget those dodgy courses. I'd recommend using your local library to its maximum - both to find a self-help book to help you directly; and, more generally, to borrow reading books so that you've always got one on the go. And when you meet a word you don't know, look it up in a dictionary so you boost your vocab.

I run written English courses. Mainly for mid-management types who probably had a loose grasp of English at school and, as, they are promoted and find they have to write reports and memos, begin to struggle. I sharpen 'em up a bit, concentrating on the common faults. You can have a copy of my basic course for nothing. I'm sure you would find it interesting. Your vocabulary is probably ok. Why learn a word such as "purchase" when you can use "buy",; why say something was "etiolated" when you can simply say that it looked pale, for example. Keep it simple. Don't know how it works but if you could get me your postcode address I'd sort it. I'll leave that one for you to perhaps talk to the answerbank.
