"Lord Carey has every right to state that Christians are an oppressed minority, just has Gays are forever stating that they are also an oppressed minority. " The big difference AOG, is that the Christian Church was among those who sought to oppress gays and others, whereas (as far as I know) gays have never sought to oppress anyone. That's the irony.

This certainly isn't the case on the Answerbank. And even if it were, being criticised is nothing to be scared of - so what if people criticise you? If your beliefs stand up to argument, that shouldn't be a problem.

As for society at large, yes it's true that criticism of Islam is sometimes controversial. Personally, I don't feel it should be, but again I see no reason to fear controversy. The works of Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens -to give two examples of writers heavily critical of Islam - consistently do very well in the UK. As are several newspapers.
