You can go, as FUNKYCHICKEN suggests, to Southampton then sail from there directly to hte isle of wight. beware though, the public transport on the island istn't very good!
I'm trying to do almost the same journey in reverse (Portsmouth to Dublin) and we discovered that to flyfrom Scumhampton to Dublin cost approx 280 for two people return, whereas from Gatwick at the same time it costs about 70. Also, so i've heard, The Solent (the water between Portsmouth and the Isle Of Wight) is the most expensive bit of water to cross in the country as its only a couple of miles or so and costs a few pounds each way. I dont know how much it is exactly though, rarely need to go ovre there!
