Hmmm - Not wishing to contradict Richard...but the answer lies in the quality of the scanner. A decent scanner will give you a very good result, and allow you to place several originals on the glass plate then 'select area to scan' so you can effectively do each photo as a separate image without the faff of reloading the scanner each time.
The issue with taking digital camera photos is getting the original nice and flat and avoiding skewing the angle at which the snap is taken.
The old document camera setups allow you to avoid those pitflls, but who has those now?
