For months and months now ive been having real problems with a lack of saliva in my mouth, normally starting when I wake up in the middle of the night. There is literally no moisture in my mouth at all and my tongue is bone dry. I can drink a pint of water, but 5 mins later my mouth will be completely dry again. I put it dowen to maybe me sleeping with my mouth open and so my mouth drying out. lately it has got worse and worse and I will be sipping water every 5 mins throughout the night to stop the discomfort. On Saturday though I had a bit of a scare. I went shopping and suddenly my mouth dried out so much I literally couldnt move my tongue. I managed to get to a shop and bought a bottle of water and drank the whole thing. However within walking 400 metres I was back to square one and had to go into yet another shop and do the same thing. My tongue is also burning as though I have scalded it. Dont want to Google anything yet, so any ideas??

are you on any medications, smow? It can be a side effect of some drugs.
Anxiety state is high on my suspicions.

A simple blood tst with rule out diabetes........unlikely.

Nasal blockage could also be a cause........unlikely.

I will put my money on my first thought.
boxy...good point.
Make an appointment to see your doctor.

Yes,thyroxine, cetirizine and omeprazole. its really really getting me down now though.
Morning Smo, I have similar to you but I breathe through my mouth and always have done (something to do with adenoids?). You have this worse than me though so I do sympathise. I thought it was my breathing through my mouth but can't think why it is like it for you and that bad poor you. Hope you get some answers, will be interested myself too.

I did see my doctor and he just gave me a mouth spray which is like an artificial saliva but that didnt really help and doesnt explain why. Didnt suggest tests or causes or anything.
Sorry - didn't see any answers whilst I was typing, may well be medication then, that's a thought.

P.S I also have absolutely no sense of smell.
No sense of smell "might " suggest that all your symptoms may well be due to a nasal problem. Mention the loss of smell to your GP and suggest perhaps an ENT opinion may be appropriate.

Hi Sqad x
Will ring doctor now for another appointment and see if I can get any joy this time.

Sjogren's syndrome?
Question Author
Thats exactly what somebody else mentioned margie.
It's probably not helpful, but I only breathed through my mouth for years and years, had nasal problems, and these all went away at the age of 30 when I gave up dairy!
