I have more or less completed this crossword, using a lot of guesswork! I'm stuck on a couple and would appreciate some help.

One of the down unclued entries _ _ ON_ ER.
The last unclued entry going across A _ D _ _ N _ E S.

Can someone please explain what the connection is between the down entries and the across entries which seems to be two completely different themes.

I have not got all of the eleven letters, I've just worked out some of the answers by pure guesswork.

The down entries fit in to one category, and the across ones, apart from 'a?d??n?es') fit in to another.
The down one is Sponger - which should fit in with all your others.
A?d??n?es exemplifies the phrase, formed by the 11 letters.
