if it is the avi format that is causing your woes google for 'avi to mpeg'. you get a huge list of programs to convert your video files, a lot with a free trial period which will be enough for your files.
ps. pirated episodes of tv shows IS naughty stuff. you bad boy
An easier option may be to do what i have done.
Most new graphics cards (i got mine from PC world circa 45) have a composite video out, a yellow socket that can plug into one of those scart adapters. then you can watch programs staight from the PC, and will save the lenghty encoding process to a DVD format, and DVD discs. Conect your PC straight to your 5.1 system and hey presto. Free TV and cinema in your own home!!! (subject to copyright of course)

takes about 30 minutes to decode per film - then burn with their in built facility (mine goes to the nero burning Rom) which takes about 10-12 minutes - using nero (only) for all this takes quite a bit longer - on a standard DVD (I use +RW) you can get three movies generally.
