sirprize

it can't be a 'witch hunt' if the witches really are witches

or do you not believe Stuart Hall was really guilty?

However, I know what a colleague who worked with Gary Glitter in the 80s thinks about his convictions for child molesting

And regarding 'pop stars', he was also working with Roger Daltrey at the time and could see how undiscriminating he was regarding the age of the girls he had
A senior officer, writing in The Times, said that the police do not normally name suspects who have only been arrested. However, they may do so if they think there are compelling reasons for believing that giving the name will prevent crime or it will lead to the detection of other crimes. In the current spate of arrests, the police have rarely named anybody on arrest, if anyone

There would possibly still be many illegal acts/'offences' still undetected which took place prior to a huge decriminalised law change for England and Wales in 1967. Not much to be gained so they would probably be ignored.

sir.prize

I don't think there's any precedent of prosecuting people for something that is no longer an offence
Yes, Zeuhl, it's unlikely that anyone will be prosecuted for blasphemy, whenever it was that they blasphemed. But there must have been temporary laws, such as laws in the War about hoarding and breach of rationing regulations and later ones about petrol rationing in the oil crises, for breach of which people were prosecuted notwithstanding that there was no such offence by the time of the prosecution or arrest. And our taxation laws change every year, so they may produce similar cases.
The crimes of which you speak sir.prize (was it my contribution that made you think of them? LoL) were victimless.

Prosecution now would be pretty pointless.

Good reasoning methyl.
Methyl, nobody cares if you care about crimes being punished from years ago.

The victims of those crimes must care very much or they wouldn't have gone to the police. How can you say they don't deserve justice?
Two questions methyl.
would you feel the same if you had been sexually abused as a child?
Should hunting Nazi criminals stop?
methyl, so if someone had abused, assaulted you years ago, and you reported it at the time, but no one believed you, wouldn't you be glad if they were brought to justice even if it was 40 years later, because i know i would.
Because the one thing we do know those who abuse rarely do it once, and there are endless victims, shattered lives, from child rape victims who spend a lifetime trying to comes to term with it, and many never do.
I couldn't care less if he is an 83 year granddad or a 40 year old bachelor, abuse is abuse in anyone's language. And those caught doing it should be prosecuted.
hear hear, em
All them claims of yrs ago should be tried and tested for peace of mind for all who have suffered of abuse.
After that i hope the more recent cases will be thoroughly looked into too.
Another vote of agreement here.
So methyl

let's see if we have that right...

all the highly trained, highly experienced sexual assault police officers currently investigating Stuart Hall, Jimmy Tarbuck etc should be immediately deployed to Oxford Street to grab Romanian shop-lifters

Doesn't seem particularly sensible; have the anti shoplifting specialist teams requested that sort of help?
zeuhl - Perhaps the existing Specialist Anti-shoplifting units could then be put on other duties.........like......erm....investigating cases of historical sexual abuse?

:o)
