I cant tell you what is wrong, however you can set up XP so that you get the famous Blue Screen of Death, instead of an automatic restart (which is what seems to be happening now). You will then get an error message, which may be very cryptic, and you can then try the microsoft knowledge base for a solution.
To change right click on My Computer then left click Properties>Advanced tab>Startup & Recovery section>Settings button>System Failure section>clear Automatic Restart and OK your way all the way out.
The next time it happens you will get the Blue Screen instead of an automatic restart.

You run exactly the same risk gettting the Blue Screen as you do with auto restart, you may lose work that was in memory but not yet saved to disk. You should not, in either case, lose work already stored on disk.
Just thought of something. You can check the logs for error messages. Right click on My Computer then left click Manage> expand the Event Viewer (click the little + sign) and read the logs, System first (just double clcik it in the right panel). You are looking for entries with a red X symbol. If you can match one with a time of auto restart that will give you a place to start. To read any entry just double click it. There is also a link in each message for more info at microsoft, but unfortunately every time time I have tried it I get a page saying there is no additional information available :(
