Last one. 7a. Amateur swimmers heading for raised sandbanks (4).

Have ASA_. Happy with the crossing answers.

I was happy with ASA for swimmers anyway, and I would have said 'R' for "raised" yielding ASAR, meaning Sandbanks. Except it doesn't or at least not in my Chambers. Only word I can fit in is ASAP, and that doesn't fit sandbanks as a definition?

Asas
ÅSAR is the plural of ÅS - meaning a kame or esker (which is a sandbank).

It is in my Chambers 11th and 12th editions printed editions, but (because of the accent on the A) is not always turning up in electronic searches.
Thank you sunny-dave.

I meant to put a ? after my post.

Thanks all. I DO use the electronic version of Chambers, and usually only really have that problem if I search for words which have accents in. Normally, if Im just checking a completed word and therefore have all the letters in, the accented variants come up as well, but I can't even get a hit on ?sas. Just one of those things I guess. But I don't miss lugging a full paper copy of Chambers around :-)
