Nightly is for developers, you should be able to disable it from the Addons menu option.
When you open Firefox it will usually show a message saying that it is not your default browser and an option to make it so.

You can download the proper version of Firefox from here http:// www.moz illa.or g/en-US /firefo x/featu res/ (a new major release is due out tomorrow if you want to leave it until then - usually available by the evening).
Make sure that you uninstall Nightly otherwise that will still run by default.
p.s. if you have a 64-bit computer then you could try either Waterfox http:// www.wat erfoxpr oject.o rg/ or Cyberfox https:/ /8pecxs tudios. com/?pa ge_id=5 2 or PaleMoon http:// www.pal emoon.o rg/ - each of those should run a bit faster than the usual 32 bit version and should have a new version released within the next few days. My favourite of those is Waterfox but it hasn't been updated during the last couple of months for various reasons.

Oh lawd it's all gone Pete Tong. Was downloading Firefox from that link and then it said IE has stopped working and windows was going to close and report it, then the cursor pointer thingy judders all about uncontrollably. I closed it and taken the batery out but it's still there when I start again. A usb mouse doesn't work, honestly I hate this thing.
If you are unable to turn off the laptop in an orderly manner then as a very last resort hold down the power button for a few seconds and that will turn it off. But that is definitely not recommended if there is still a lot of disk activity happening.
You could consider downloading the Firefox installation file on the desktop and copying it onto a memory stick. Then plug that into the laptop when that is up and running again, and simply run the installation file from the memory stick.

Hi again Neti.
You've had a few problems with your Win 8 machine and I am beginning to wonder if if your installation is faulty?
You can do a refresh from the Settings menu (hover in the bottom right corner)
Choose Change PC Settings, go to General, scroll down a bit and chose "Refresh your PC without affecting your files".
This is a bit of a drastic option and you will lose the programs that you have installed since you got it.
Or, if it is still in warranty, go back to the shop where you purchased it and see what they think.
This is just an opinion.

I do have a Sony phone helpline number and they are reputed to be good and helpful and if it's not in Spanish and too technical I will call them tomorrow. I've had nothing but trouble since day one, but then it may be my ignorance not Windows 8 which is completely pointless in my opinion. That's the trouble I just don't know what it is supposed to do. But I can certainly do more on my Samsung netbook (3 yrs old)using xp than I can on my sony.
