courier work

has anyone heard of postal and courier, as I am thinking about starting up my own courier business , but a bit unsure about handing over any money ( �49 95 )as we all know, that there a lot of bandits out there.

I was a self employed courier for 10 years and would not recommend it. There are a number of reasons for this:
1. to charge a realistic price you have to deliver it same day sometimes in the next few hours.
2. the van insurance equates to taxi drivers ie v high
3. the amount of speed restrictions today will need all the luck to keep your licence clean.
4. the only way to make good money is to have multiple drops.. the only way to get these is to act as a subcontractor.
5. you may need to purchase a van every couple of years and can exceed 100,000 miles/year.
6. you need to work 24 hours/day..7 days/week.

i had a courier company, at the hieght i had 12 vans on the road and i hated every single minute of it!

i personaly wouldnt pay anybody for information, if you are serious about buying a van, all you need to do is aproach the big boy's, they are always looking for small 1 man bands to run parcels for them.

get yourself down to people like, target,tnt,tuffnels,lynx,etc etc....dont send them letters as they never read them but they may have 5 minutes to have a chat with you!!

I was a self employed courier for 9 years - I would cut and paste all of Kwicky's post !!

I did make a living out of it but had great, solid, daily calling clients who were sending packes between them which helped. I thoroughly enjoy driving so loved it if you don't you wont get on with it !

PS Don't pay anyone for information on setting up - find out who the local boys are and try getting to be on their books - with Christmas coming up you might get lucky and they might be looling for owner drivers.
