They don’t just kill their hostages and those they perceive to be enemies – they subject them to the most brutal and bloody methods imaginable. Simply horrendous! If they want them dead, why not just shoot them?

But when they behead hostages who they have held for months, that's no frenzied attack . That's simple cold bloodied barbarism in the true meaning of the words.

If you're talking about beheading It's tradition
Much the same as the American's traditional use of the electric chair - in one 't execution a few years back flames burst from the prisoner's head.
Although not used much now certain states do still use it.
I'd certainly call that barbaric - wouldn't you?

i think that chrisgel got it right, shock and awe, they post their vile acts on the net as well, so more of the people, the faithful, can see what they do to their enemies. I am not sure they are any more barbaric than some in more recent days, not when you look at what the so called civilised Germans did to anyone they didn't care for, shoved them into ovens alive, used for experiments, and gassed them by the millions. Not to deviate from your post, but suggest that their medieval mindset is still in place, after all we hung, drawn and quartered people, which is beyond barbaric.,
