11 Plus Question....?? Please Help
41 Answers
The question is...Sobia will be X years old 5 years from now. How old was she 3 years ago? (Your answer should include X)..... Answer_________
*note the X is printed in bold.
This is a question put on an 11+ paper. Is this me being stupid (or having a senile moment?) Only serious answers please.
Even I cannot understand how to work this out (trying to help someone out or at least help explain how they should get to their answer). This is the only one she stuck on. On the paper, they haven't given a start age as such....is the 'X' Roman numerals 10? But I don't think it is. Any ideas anyone..would appreciate your help.

And it works the other way: we don't know what her age is now or, of course, what it'll be in five years time. Instead of writing "whatever it will be in 5 years time" we write "X" Her age now, we are told,is five years younger, less than, that age "X" so we'll call it "X minus 5" or X-5. And we are asked what her age was 3 years less than that, 3 years ago. That's another minus of 3 years. She is now X-5. Taking another 3 off means she was X minus 5 minus 3. That's a total of 8 minuses: X -8.
