Going to Atlanta
I intend to go to Atlanta in August to something called Dragoncon. It is mainly based at one hotel and I want to stay there.
I have tried booking the hotel direct with the hotel website and it says that it is fully booked. I tried via Ebookers too. I also tried to book as a package with a travel agent but they were unable to find a company that do a package.
I want to fly from Edinburgh and would prefer to book the flight nearer the time, but would book now if I had to.
The hotel is the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (back-up hotel would be the Atlanta Marriott Marquis).
I go on holiday once a decade so I am not sure about all this stuff. Is it possible that I may still be able to book the hotel? Surely there is some rooms and they keep them aside or something.
Can anybody point me in the correct direction so that I go to the Dragoncon?

But when there is a convention hotels do tend to book up early.
And why wait until later to book your flight? You will get better deals now rather than wait until nearer the time. If you only go on holiday once a decade then make sure it is the holiday you want and get it booked rather than making do with second best!

Incidentally, you probably saw this - it gives the third option of the Hilton

sorry, no, wolf63, I just googled it. I have been to Atlanta, though. It's quite accustomed to conventions, but it's one thing to host a convention for 500 Cadillac salesmen and quite another to host 30,000 sci-fi fans. They're going to take up a lot of hotel rooms.
I wouldn't worry about impersonality, though, you'll all have something in common. Not everyone will be dressed as a Klingon. Enjoy yourself!

Like most southern cities, a "circle" road runs the entire circumfrence of Atlanta. Each segment of that circle is really a city within itself. From Stone Mountain on the east to College Park on the south near the airport., to the upscale community of Buckhead, north of downtown. Transportation to the city center is very good. The most distant point is probably the south end where Hartsfield airport is located. It's about 7 to 8 mile from the city center and there's several good hotels there. One of my favorites is the Marriott Renaissance Concourse Hotel about 1/2 miles from the airport. I travel extensively and have always had good results with any of the Marriott products. Fairfield Inns are their low end product followed by Courtyard but they are all accetable, clean and reasonable. Check here:

Keep in mind, that while there's a lot to see an do in and around Atlanta, it's better known as a business destination. Having said that, don't miss the Coca-Cola Center or the Underground. Good luck and welcome to the U.S.!

Clanad - thanks. I am not too sure if the US is ready for me.
I had to book today so that I could stop worrying about it. I booked the Atlanta Marriott Marquis but it is costing me about 795 for 5 nights (!!!!swear words!!!) but if I find something cheaper then I can cancel.
I want to go to one of the main hotels that has the convention. It is a big city and I live in a little city and I am travelling alone so I don't want to stress myself out too much.
I think I would like to go to the Coca Cola place just out of curiosity. I drink plenty of the stuff. I will see what the people that I am meeting up with think.
All I need now is insurance and book the cattery for the furrballs.
Roll on August.....
