Taking cash abroad

I am travelling to North Iraq with my kurdish husband to visit his family. What facilities are there for banking or should we take cash?

The local witch doctor of the village will be in charge of money matters including,currency changing.

Is it the best time to be travelling there? Here in the UK it is confusing and I know it is a fairly big country, but is it not better to get them to travel over here?

Austrian Airlines are starting scheduled flights to Erbil via Vienna next month... sorry, that's answering a completely different question, I know... I'd take cash, but I've not been there.
