They didn't want to go to the kids club at the resort so we said stay here and off we went. Not once but a couple of times. Wouldn't do it now or recommend it but back then figured it would be ok. Popped back to check on them luckily they were fine. Sadly maddie wasn't.
Anyone who went to Butlins or another one of the big holiday camps back in the 60s to the 80s will possibly remember the 'chalet patrols' . This was a system where staff walked round the chalets listening out for children crying. Then an announcement would come over the PA in the club room ''Baby crying in chalet 56'' or what ever one it was. The idea was that you left the kids in the room and went down to the club bar.
As I understand it the McCann's were sitting outside the restaurant just 50 yd or so away from and in sight of the front of the room the child was in. Unfortunately there was a rear entrance as well which is where the kidnapper got in. With hindsight that was careless but I do not see it as negligent . Many of us would have done the same at that time.

Eddie...I remember that. My mum and dad left us under that baby sitting scheme.
It's very sad and I can't say I blame the parents. A surgeon and a GP who probably weren't living in the same world that the majority live in. It was misguided judgement, not neglect. You can't say someone neglects their children by the actions of one evening on holiday.

I don't blame the McCanns at all. Every time I see Kate on the TV, I notice her haunted eyes. At the time I thought they were wrong to leave such small children alone and did blame them to some extent, but as the years have gone on I've changed my view. Sadly, I don't think Madeliene is still alive, but I'd love to be wrong.
Seriously ...... do folk really go on a family holiday and go out to dinner leaving part of the family (minors) home alone in a room or apartment?? Seriously?? OMG!!! I really didn't think anyone would be so stupid? Would they do it in the UK??? If they did and they were discovered they would be prosecuted!!
