Bit of a poser this one! A 1.8 Vectra with a mind of its own. It keeps over-revving and I can sometimes drive without my foot on the accelerator...a truly automatic car but very worrying. The engine management system at the garage says there is nothing wrong. Has anyone else had a similar experience and , if so, how was it remedied?

I had a similar problem with an automatic Astra where the revs stuck at about 3000.
It was a faulty throttle sensor which was fixed under guarantee, but it was non too funny trying to stop an automatic that didn't want to slow down. The engine management light came on at low revs and went out as the revs got higher!

This can also be caused by a disconnected or wrongly connected vaccum pipe (part of the petrol fuel sys)

Sorry to hear this. I have a W plate 1.8 Vectra and have had to get the ECU re-programmed following the engine cutting out at low revs (almost the opposite to your problem). The VX garage told me too that there were no fault codes stored on the ECU.

Sorry I can't give you anything more concrete other than prepare yourself for a whopping bill to fix the ECU if all other fixes fail to work.
