i love mac cartoons, never too offensive, but often accurate..
.

when ever it was broached with us, it was 'as well as' and not 'instead of'.
That is, do you want to turn up and do an extra eight hours over a week end as well as your usual weekly whack ?
and not surprisingly the answer was No thanks.

The difficulty was that week end working was only for some - not administrators of course - nor labs or X ray departments

Anyone who has been in or around a Hospital at a week end knows how wound down the services are: If you see a nurse you write to the papers. I have no idea why you would want an elective operation under these circumstances - unless your family was going to come in in shifts to nurse you.

Do they do this anywhere else ? If the answer is no, then consider why.

from my link,

Our doctors are all at sea. They are outraged, horrified and disturbed at the prospect of Government plans to expand out-of-hours GP care. Dr Mark Porter, current chairman of the British Medical Association (BMA), which is holding its annual conference this week, said the idea of a “Tesco” NHS, offering a “full service, 24/7”, was “just ridiculous when the health service can barely afford its current model”.
