my 48 year old brother is an alchoholic he has lived with my mum since his divorce that was two years ago
since then he has been to detox twice but to no avail.
im so worried because he now has cirrosis of the liver
and he keeps falling over and has very limited use of his legs and it seems to be getting worse by the day.
it not just him im worried about its my 74 year old mum
who has to care for him.
i do what i can but i just feel its not enough
the doctors just dont want to know.
if anyone knows how i can get help or knows anyone in the same position as me and can advise i would be grateful

but like i say, you can support him but only he can help himself, your mum should kick him out, it will force him into a choice, hopefully thre right one. good luck to all of yoy .

Your brother needs telling in no uncertain terms,he is killing himself, but as devilwoman says only he can help himself, but he needs to do it quickly,he must admit he is an alcholic, but he must also want to get help,it is no good you wanting him to get it,it must come from him, this is so hard on your mum, could she just throw him out ? i doubt it, I hope nox answers this because he has had his battles with drink and come out the other side, I wish you lots of luck, Ray
Your brother is in self destruct mode and there will be little you can do to help him. I should think that by the fact he is losing use of his legs that he is probably past the point of no return. My son in law gave up drink and has been left with alcoholic epilepsy. My thoughts are with you and your mother. I think all you can do is try and offer your mother support a really dreadful situation for you all.xx
Hello gsxr,
I agree with devilwoman and RB. It is really up to your brother to seek the help he so badly needs. They doesn't mean that you don't give him all the support you can - which I am sure you already do. Has he tried AA? If you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau they can put you in touch with local support groups so you can perhaps coax him to go.
Only he can help himself here (that is probably why the doctors have given up on him) so give him all the encouragement by stressing how it is affecting your mother.
As ruge says there is no magic elixier, but opening up on here will I hope relieve some of the stress that you are suffering. Best wishes to you and your family.
