A war memorial has been built in Bradley Stoke, Glocs, though nobody from the village has ever been killed in action. Are they pessimists?
Kanye West's daughter has been named North. North West has a certain something , hasn't it ?
The Royal Navy is to ban the traditional toast "to our wives and sweethearts" (traditional response "And may they never meet!") because it is not relevant or inclusive enough for the modern Navy. And so?
A survey of 20,000 people reveals that twice as many Britons than Amerians come across as "downhearted" but Americans were twice as likely to appear as "caring" or as "energetic optimists". Are you surprised ?
No, I don;t think so, although one might think they are realists. It may seem strange but surely they would honouring those who have died in war regardless what part of the country they came from ?
I predict she'll be going places.
Maybe it's a consequence of allowing those of a female persuasion into the Navy :-)
No unsurprised. Over the other side of the pond they can seem to have an overly extrovert in your face attitude, or at least the ones that travel. Perhaps others personality types stay at home. Downhearted ? Back to realists again then.
Americans i have met were mostly cheery and optimistic,
if Kayne West has named his child North then he ought to get a boot up the backside.
I suggest they should keep the traditional toast for the RN, i suspect that not that much has changed, any port in a storm.
as to the memorial, not sure on that one, it does seem a little ghoulish.
The girl could always take the middle name Veering. North Veering West. Then her children could be be Biscay, Cromarty, North Uitsere etc or Strong Gale. Would have to keep or hyphenate her maiden name, but that's a small price to pay for novelty.
You don't have to be a celebrity, to give your kids daft names. Look at Chardonnay for instance. Its started as a joke name on a low-grade ITV TV program and now its rife all over our housing estates. Has anybody noticed the growing tendency to give girls names that would normally have gone to boys ? Charley, Joeey, etc. The trend doesn't seem to have transferred over to boys thank god...no sign of any being called Mary as yet.
They're so vane. I tried this 'joke' on another thread about NNW, but I think it went over their heads.
I doff my cap to you, fred. I'm still frantcally ploughing through last weeks Times. Mind you, I always do the crossword first and that takes till Thursday.
"but Americans were twice as likely to appear as "caring" or as "energetic optimists". Yeah. Quite surprised. Lately we are the land of random shootings and total pessimism... so I think those results are intentionally skewed.
