Raining in north west England too. My son broke up a couple of weeks ago on the day of his final GCSE exam, all he has done every day since is stay in bed till lunchtime then sit at his PC till bedtime at 10 pm.
As SD says, start of the haggis shooting season, but traditionally school children went berry picking in the school holidays to buy their school uniforms for the next year (I did anyway). Like the tattie holidays in October this seems to have died out - can't see many of today's school kids nabbling on the berry fields for 6 weeks!!
We picked on the Berry fields of Blair (Blairgowrie) Got picked up by bus (!) at 7 am and got home again about 4.30 pm. Mainly raspberries, but occasionally strawberries which was back breaking work. Paid by the lb. Picked into "luggies" tied round your waist, which were then emptied into buckets. Fulll buckets weighed. You had to watch your buckets or they might get pinched. We all had great suntans and badly scratched arms by the time we went back to school - but were all in the same boat.
