After that day, I only saw hedgie once during the day until last week. Then it was out quite a bit. However, by then I had sussed that he/she had "moved house" from the front door pot to my polytunnel. I suspect the PT got a bit hot during the day. My instinct was to leave well alone since he/she looked well. I continued providing cat food, the odd egg and plenty of water.
Tonight I have my answer. He is a "she". SHE now has a "Mini Me". THe little one is SOOOOOOOOOO cute. I am made up.

Netting and ring pulls from cans and plant pots, plant ties etc are all safety hazards. If you are in any doubt whether baby hedgie is ok I can give you my hedgehog rescue friend's phone number - she lives near Leicester and would be willing to take little one in I'm sure. You can contact me through Gness. x
I've spoken to vets, Ann. I'm not too worried because it ate and drank quite well once we'd freed it and didn't look poorly and has wondered off. The nest is either in or near my polytunnel (I've been careful not to disturb them). There is food and water constantly provided in that area - I think they like that area because it is in the chicken pen so there are always loads of scraps in there as well. I THINK they just get too hot in there during the day (despite my best efforts to ventilate it, it is blinking hot in there).
I ALWAYS cut up anything like plastic can holders and stuff before I chuck them

lol Rosetta, I have absolutely no slugs whatsoever in the polytunnel. I think Mum Hedgie moved from the front door pot where she lived underneath and took up residence in or near there.
We move our pots slightly in the evenings to reveal the slugs so that the Hedgies can have a wee snackette!
What with 3 hedgies, 2 blackbirds (4 babies due to fledge anytime soon, so I shall be on permanent cat watch - we've had 8 leave successfully so far), 3 chickens and 4 cats its just as well I blinking well work from home!!!!
