Weird Electronic Distortion Of Laptop Speakers

Hi all , a few weeks ago my laptop speakers became distorted and crackly.

now the sound seems to be more electronic sounding

it is the same when there is headphones or speakers plugged in

i have deleted and re-installed the driver, but its made no difference.

any ideas?

Just a thought, have you looked at the sound effects set up. Maybe your speakers are set up for theatre or something else that is giving you this noise.

cheers chrisgel - how can i check that? i cant see any options for that.
could it have been accidentally changed?
Depends on your sound card. You can normally access it through control panel etc. On mine, arrow on right of taskbar this opens up start programs. In there is a speaker icon. Double click it and the sound effects menu opens.
