Nasty little critters have been identified as unwelcome guests on my sofa. Yuk , already been chomped on once.
Now I lost my little dog way back in February , we have no pets.
The children who visit every weekend have cats ( 9) from her mum's place and cats and dogs from the other house.
Are fleas able to hop into cases for a visit or are they likely to be from when I had my dog. ?
We have hard floors and a rug in the sitting room and we vacuum regularly. Did we ought to share our bad news with the children's mother or keep stum?

Prob from them yes. We have a dog and keep up to date with her flea and worming stuff. Our neighbours however don't and after our dogs playing together for only 10 minutes, I was horrified later on that night to discover fleas not only on her but me too! (They seem to love chomping on me!) I squished them and since haven't had any probs.

Sounds like they may have hitchhiked!
They could be left over from when you had a dog. I stayed with a friend once and I noticed cat fleas in his carpet. I didn`t say anything. He had lived there for a few years and had never had any pets so yes, they seem to be able to live without a host animal for some time.
They can be left over. Give your sofa a good spray and see if that deals with them
Cat and dog fleas can live for several months without feeding. They don't like human blood that much, but will put up with it if there's nothing else. (Tip from Mrs Beeton - To catch a flea, dab it with some damp soap!).
