If it was a ferral cat it's possible, but more likely the cat was simply playing with the snake because cats love to play with anything that moves within their reach. Something as tempting asa wriggling snake would seem like ideal fun for a cat, whkch would have no natrual fear of a snake as an enemy, but might eventually find out the hard way!
In built up areas of cyprus, where there a communities of people nearby, there are lots of long black snakes. They are the equivelent of our grass snake and are harmless. I guess the cat was playing with it. Also, unlike us Brits - many cypriot villagers are pleased that these snakes hang around their gardens and fields, because they help keep the mice down. They are not an uncommon sight in gardens.
