Are snakes worth the trouble?

A news report says that snakes kill 7000 people annually in Bangladesh alone (probably 10s of thousands worldwide).

It seems their main function ecologically is in controlling certain types of vermin but does that really justify their murderous behaviour towards humans?

Ireland seems to manage very well without them.

Should we exterminate all venomous snakes?

Kill, kill, kill. What is it about human beings that they feel the need to kill anything they don't like? Maybe we should exterminate a few human beings and we would all sleep easier.

I've never seen a snake in real life, just in a zoo. I'd really like to handle one, and to answer the question, no.

Snakes kill things they don't like? They sure aren't killing people to eat them (usually).

I think its more a self-defence strategy, buying some time to make a getaway.

Out of all the venomous snakes down under very few will attack when they feel threatened, most will just slither away and hide.

Shows who the aggressors really are.

I've handled snakes, in Morocco and zoos in the UK. I nearly forgot the one in Tenerife - the owner often walked round with it hanging from his neck.

I don't think I'd handle one that I came across in the wild, though

I think snakes killing 1000s of people a year is a bit of a good reason not to like them?

According to BBC News 50,000 people are murdered a year; snakes kill 25,000 a year and dogs kill 10,000.

Oddly, humans are must susceptible to mosquito bites than any other creature. Maybe their purpose on earth in to control the human population, the second biggest killer on the planet.
