My son (who we were with) had this last year on driving away from the shuttle terminal at Calais.
The French Gendarma was pleasant but firm, and pretended (I think) not to recognise the paper licence as a real one.
It took over an hour of him radioing to various offices, accompanied by a trip to the local Police Station to get it sorted.
The Senior Gendarme at the staion explained that they had been told (by Paris) not to recognise these paper documents any more, only the"credit card" type licence.
I have since checked on the Internet, and whilst the paper licence is completely valid in the EU, it seems many Police Forces may be awkward if you produce a paper one and not the new type.
If you have an old paper one it might be worth changing.
