i may sell an item to someone in norway, to receive payment they want my bank account number and sort code number to transfer the money, is this safe to do?

I don't see why not. Every time you give someone a cheque you are giving them this information (not very often these days, I realise!)
I agree with cheekychops, they would need your password and secret numbers do do anything untoward..eg transfer money from your account.

If you are nervous of this, though, you could set up a Paypal account for them to transfer money into.

In your case though providing this is not a response to an unsolicited transaction and providing you're not a celebrity with details of things like your date of birth readilly available on line you should be OK
