A young man who suffered serious head injuries in an accident is to be 'assessed' to see if he's eligible for the new benefit that is set to replace DLA. He won't understand what's going on and this is going to be very upsetting for him.
I plan to contact his social worker tomorrow but I'm asking here if anyone knows if he could swap benefits without the assessment?

He will need assessing, but he can have someone with him to help.

Thank you, Pixie. Bad news, then. He'll be unsettled for days over this.
We have had clients like this, too. They took some preparing and reassuring too. Will he be upset about a strange person coming in, or worried about the benefits? I can only suggest you prepare him as much as possible in a way that he understands. Good luck.
I have a mentally disabled brother who has been transferred to the new benefit based on the answers that were given on the form which his GP filled in on his behalf.

He (understandably) was very worried about what was going to happen. It was sorted out quickly and reasonably stress-free, Sandy. I hope the same applies to your friend.

He's my nephew, Mrs Chappie. I hope with the social worker involved it will be as stress free for him as it can be.
My brother was convinced that it was going to be withdrawn. It has, in fact, increased by quite a substantial amount. I must say I was quite surprised.

Oh I feel for you both, Sandy. I had a similar situation with my mother recently..dementia not brain injury.
Why, oh why do these people think it is for the best to have to involve the person even if it distresses them.
My mother was totally confused by a strange face leaning over her bed asking how she was, is she happy and how would she feel about moving to another home.
I hope the social worker can be sympathetic to you, Sandy...x
