So we are going to help Nigeria to improve their jails so we can get rid of their riff-raff from our jails, which gets me to thinking I wonder how much did we receive to house Ex-Liberia President Charles Taylor in our crumbling jails?

I wonder if we will be setting up series of similar deals, so as to get rid of the other 5,402 foreign criminals from the top ten nationalities that are in our jails?

cheaper to build jails to house them in their home country than to keep them in our prisons surely? labour costs here alone will be far in excess of what it costs to build prisons.
Why do we need to improve their jails? Once they are there, they are no longer our concern.
they are if they raped, murdered someone, do we let them get away with it if they are let to go home and no action taken, sure the victims and the families would have something to say about that.. if they spend the time in jail in Nigeria they are not here, and maybe those jails will not be so accommodating.
I get your point AOG but maybe it's the lesser of two evils.

Plus, if they are over there then less chance of getting straight out of a UK jail, claiming Asylum and recommitting on our soil.

All we need to do now is improve our border controls tro make sure they can't get back in (or get through in the first place).

But yes, I can hear the 'ooman rights lawyers licking their lips already at this one and the ECHR lining up a load of right-on liberal judges to tell our govenrment what they can't do - again.
I try to have imagination, but , how, exactly can the ECHR get involved in this ? What can you plead that comes within a gnat's crochet of their agreed jurisdiction, and is arguable anyway?
Could they argue that prison conditions in Nigeria were so bad that it would be an infringement of their human rights to send them there?
BUt maybe the walls of foreign prisons are more porous than those that surround UK ones. Repatriation might be the first step to liberty.
"Plus, if they are over there then less chance of getting straight out of a UK jail, claiming Asylum and recommitting on our soil."

exactly
one of the reasons cited by this trash Charles Taylor for serving his sentence in Rwanda was that it would be easier for his family to visit him, as opposed to the cost and inconvenience of them coming here to the UK.

but you can bet your bottom dollar some of them will come here and not go back, (theyll know all the scams and tricks to get in and stay here, not that its that difficult to do)so they certainly dont want him doing chokey over there, thats no use to them.
Sandy, yes they can try, and, worse, someone will pay them to do it, but it can't get anywhere. It is standard practice in the EU and elsewhere, to repatriate convicted criminals, the only restriction being if the person faces the death penalty or some other 'cruel and unnatural punishment'.
// cheaper to build jails to house them in their home country than to keep them in our prisons surely? l //

Exactly. The million pounds they're spending to improve Nigerian jails would very soon be spent keeping them here. It's a cost effective way of getting rid of foreign criminals. You should be pleased.
exactly my point, not just the prison staff but all the other things you have to have to incarcerate them safely.

And isn't that the ploy they regularly use?
well some may well cite countries rules, laws on homosexuality as a reason for leaving, if you had watched Stephen Fry's documentary the other day about gays and the dislike, hatred, simply because of their sexuality, and the persecution and indeed murder as in footage he showed of men being hanged in Iran i think it was, all being accused and who knows if they were gay, hanged because it's a crime in that country. truly horrible
AOG - don't want to get too personal, but I have this image of you waiting for the paperboy/girl to deliver your DM every morning. You then spread it out on the kitchen table and go through it with a fine tooth comb, highlighting everything with a yellow marker that you don't like/disagree with. Then it's time for you to fire up your computer and start your AB "news links" for the day. Please tell me this is NOT what you do?
which is no different to the pinko right on lefties always scanning the media for something to be offended by !
