Went to collect an item I'd ordered online from Asda Direct.

"Oh, you paid by paypal - well we'll need photo ID.!
"Sorry don't have any photo ID."
"You must have a driving licence or a passport."
"No, sorry I don't."
"Well, you should have photo ID."
"OK, I'll just get my money back from Paypal and buy somewhere else."
"Well I'll give you it this time, but not the next time."

Next time??

In all fairness to them, it's for your own protection from identity theft.
Did you not take the online invoice printed out with you to show your details? that's all we need at work. photo id means nothing really if it's a passport as it does not have your address on it anyway and you could be picking it up for a family member that ordered it.
As society already said you think that a shop worker protecting you from id theft and herself from disciplinary action, dismissal or legal action is odd? Would you be more angry if the someone hacked your computer and went to asda and this good natured soul Just gave it to the thief without asking for photo id? I'd hardly call that odd but what is odd is someone in this day an age not having photo id! What happens when you lose your bank card and need money or need to identify yourself to the bank or the police stop you and want to know who you are?

Yes DJH I did take the printed online invoice with me to the store.
Grandpaw, I know loads of people who do not drive and have never had a passport so what are they supposed to do?
Do paypal charge the likes of asda like they charge the rest of us for transferring money or is it added to the price already so some one not paying by palpal actually pays for what they are no getting thats the choice to pay through paypal .
The odd thing is, she gave it out anyway, so her asking for ID was completely pointless.
It is in the terms and conditions, why only Paypal I am not sure...

Not sure weecalf, I certainly paid the same through paypal as I would have in-store.
You just need your debit/credit card if you have used them to pay.
well i am surprised it says on the asda site that photo id is needed when paying with paypal, seems unusual, maybe they're covering all the bases

I buy through Easyfundraising.org so that Samaritans get a percentage of all my on-line purchases. Most large organisations have a paypal option which I use in conjuction with my debit card.
