In the USA, the standard is a 40 hour work week. Check with your STATE's labor board. For that matter, in her nursing home, they SHOULD have the labor-laws posted in the employee break-room.
Number of hours, yes - 48 hours, but it's averaged over a period, see douglas' link. It also depends what industry you're in - OH is a driver and the rules about rest times are very specific.
I don't see a problem with having to work 14 consecutive days of 3 hours a day for example.
The only constraints are the working time directive, the statutory minimum holiday entitlements (which would mean for example you couldn't work 365 without a holiday) plus any contractual ones, perhaps resulting from union agreements
The question is "How many days, consecutively, can you be expected to work in any one period" without leave or weekends I would imagine. Depends upon where in the world you reside and work I would say. The law differs from country to country so the question is far too vague in its structure. Please be specific.
no, not days....but hours under the working time directive. i, however, have flouted this law as i have done 10 x 14 hour shifts in a row at my hospital (i am a nurse). but it is also my choice to do this.....and i have another three to complete - i'm knackered!!!! (but very rich!!!!) x
As this is a UK site I didn't feel the need to specify that I am of course talking about the UK.
I was asking with regards to my son who regularly works 12 hours shifts for 6-8 days without break. The wikipedia link is very helpful as it shows that he has the right to refuse to work more than 48hrs in a seven day period.
